Gan Country, southwestern Burkina Faso, West Africa. Mid S. XX
The Torfan is a spiritual entity and a central artistic motif of the Gan people in Burkina Faso, usually represented as a snake with a wavy body and between one and ten heads. The number of heads is proportional to the protective power of the Torfan since each head represents a particular field of power and protection.
These pieces are created by hand using the lost wax bronze technique that makes them unique since the mold is broken with each one..
Gan bronzes are often placed on altars next to household fires to protect them., that's why many have that dark patina, not only because of their age but because of where they have been exposed.
